So, this glitched.org renovation is taking a lot longer than expected because of a number of factors, but it will be available, soon. I'm also re-styling this blog and converting to Wordpress. I'm almost done, trust me.

Also, I should mention that Phaelam wanted his tracks taken off of glitched.org and my box.net directory, so I obliged. Hopefully, he'll allow me to put some back up there, one day.

Anyway, follow me on twitter for updates, in the mean time.

I will be updating glitched.org this or next week with these two tracks. I really want to do a redesign and move everything to bandcamp.mu (which seems to be the best free solution to get your music out there). Also, it's time to renew glitched.org again, so there may be a couple site hiccups.

Anyway, "except europa" is inspired by the movie, 2010: The Odyssey Continues. I guess this movie is what I'm all about (or what my music is all about): the future, fear of apocalypse, space, the good ol' USSR, and malfunctioning sentient computers. I don't know why, but monoliths compel me to make the eeriest ambient music. All Virus TI Snow, played live.

"Sunridge" is a "found song," in that I had forgotten about it and came back to it, a year after recording. One day I was rummaging around the myriad temporary folders on my harddrive, when I came across a simple, two-track Ableton Live file. Surprisingly, all it needed was a little EQing and editing, and it was done. My friend says it sounds vaguely "Orbitalish", which is never a bad thing; they were among my first influences. I think he says that because the Monomachine's FM machine (dynamic type, I think) is used liberally and is reminiscent of early Orbital tracks. All Monomachine and Machinedrum.

Both tracks were made exclusively with the TI Snow. Both tracks were recorded live, without sequencing. No beats in these because I'm still in the "honeymoon period" with the Snow. As you will hear, it's a very powerful instrument with complex synthesis capabilities.

I have uploaded the one of the patches that I used in "computers dream". (Ok, it's not the exact patch because I didn't save it, but it's a reasonable facsimile.)

I haven't updated this blog in a while because Twitter offers a lot more in terms of immediacy and ergonomics. I feel like "macro-blogging" (blogspot) is a chore, in comparison. Still, with a 140 character limit on Twitter updates, you can't expound upon anything; I guess that's why I'll continue to do this archaic form of communication.

autechre show: philadelphia, 4/16

Philadelphia show last night, 4/16:

Best. AE. Show. Ever.

+Parking was never so easy: Transit Nightclub is right by a bank and there happened to be one spot left in the bank parking lot. Total walking distance in 45 degree whether: 10 paces. By the way, can you get any more security than parking behind a bank?!

+At 8:45 or 9:00, they still had not let us in, when who brushes by me, trying to get into the venue? Rob and Sean. I had to point out, amid shouts of, "Hey, this is the line, buddy," that the "assholes" cutting in line were actually the feature f*king act! Only in electronic music would the 2nd (behind AFX?) most well known act be able to go unrecognized.

+They let us in to the club (yes, just a one-room club) and Rob Hall began his set. Ya know, I like that guy. Yeah, most DJ's don't really put much effort into their mixes, but his was creative; it was classic IDM, but he managed to remix and extend tracks, which made it interesting.

+Ghram Massey gets up on stage and throws down a lazy, jazzy hi-hat beat and proceeds to blow into his clarinet thingie. I really loved his beats, but the atonal saxophone stuff just doesn't work for me. I keep thinking he's going to launch into "Pacific 101". I give the guy massive props though--he's 808 fricken' state!

+So the stage is set up at the front of the rectangle shaped room and the bar runs parallel to it. I stayed mainly near the end of the bar where it's easy to see what gear everybody is using. Unbeknownst to me at the time, there's only one way out/in to the stage and that's where I was for most of the show.

+Massey gets off the stage where I was and he is immediately accosted by a mid-30's, preppy looking dude. As far as I could tell, it seemed like Massey was being talked to rather than spoken with. Poor guy was trapped the entire night.

+So, Rob Hall gets back on for a few minutes, when Rob and Sean get up on stage. Sean comes balk down, stands right next to me, and lights a smoke. Nobody really has any idea, it seems.
Some super-fanboy starts drooling and not making any sense. Sean is nice about it though and simply says, "thanks."

Being the humorous type, I lean over to Sean and ask, "Hey, who's this guy getting up on stage? Why's he fooling with their equipment."

Hah, Sean got this look on his face like his balls got chopped off and starts to respond, "Oh, he's one half of the band, Autechre..." I stop him mid-sentence and let him know I'm joking.
Hah. He chuckled and responded, "I was going to say...I was trying to be nice." (When he got on stage after our chat, he said something to Rob and pointed over to me. They both chuckled again.)

I didn't want to smother the guy, but I know he likes to talk gear, so I asked him about, what else? The Monomachine. I asked, "So, you have an MK2, right?" "Yeah," he responded.
"What do you think of it compared to the Classic?"
"It's a totally different instrument. It sounds totally different. There's no noise."
"Oh, you mean the noise floor?"
"Yeah, it's much higher quality."
The conversation trailed off after that, as he had to get up on stage again.
This is the second time I've had a conversation with the guy and I can say, for being such a lauded figure in electronica, he's nice and he seemed engaged. Good dude.

+AE's set was the most interesting of the "new AE" type of stuff that I have heard. More "concrete" and structured, as the previous tour, but more than that: it was non-stop and you didn't want to miss one second of it.

+So, obviously, there's a Monomachine, Machinedrum, but what else? Rob was haunched over a controller type thingie all night. It seemed to have some tactile something (I guess a mod wheel or something). I had a good amount of knobs and was quite small. I did not notice the G2 this time. What could that thing be? Just a controller or a synth?

+Before I left, I thought I'd shake Mr. Massey's hand and give him a complement. I mean, he did the album, "Gorgeous," for god's sakes.

+In summary, go to Philadelphia if you want to see any electronic show because you will personally meet your biggest inspirations.

Phaelam sent me this great little (1:30) loop that I thought I could extend. I did a lot more than extend it; it's a fully-fleged TReD Grp track now. (The original track has been uploaded, too. Check the box for "010108 slimp.")

The main beat was chucked into the MDUW and f*cked with. I added some extra "bouncy" MD flavor, too. The rest of the the constituent tracks were slowed-down and re-arranged in live.

AE - Stud Rmx

I made a "remix" or "cover" of AE's classic "Stud" from Tri Repetate.
This track was done almost entirely with Elektron machines. The main synth and background stuff is the Monomachine (SID+DPRO BBOX). The main drum pattern is the MDUW. (Interestingly, I had a hard time mixing the drums and re-recorded them several times. I actually put the MDUW through my G2, using a "spectrum tilt" filter, which did away with the harshness.)

The only non-Elektron part is the mellow, delayed, pwm-type synth track.

my autechre adventure

A funny little story: I've seen AE three times here in the states and they're great, live. The second time I saw them was, hands-down, the best (although, their most recent concert was great, too--the "Elektron" concert, I call it). This event was June 2000 or 2001, when they were still very heavily into their Nord Lead phase ("LP5").

I looked on the WARP website and the only thing that was mentioned about the venue was that it was at Princeton (university), in Princeton, New Jersey. It was about 2.5 hours away from where I live, near Philadelphia, but I thought it would be worth it. I mean, it was the summer and I never mind exploring new places.

So, I drive a couple hours and eventually I find the school. I ask around about where AE is supposed to play, but of course nobody knows who AE is in America. After driving around for a few more minutes, I happen upon a row of what looks like frat houses. (AE? Frat houses?) I park and walk around asking about AE, again. Of course, nobody is of any help, but I found one "goth" kid at the corner of one of these houses--when in doubt, always follow the goth kid. (Misdirected as they are in their belief that Autechre is "dark" music, goth kids have amazing sense of direction.) So, this kid leads me to this unassuming frat-house with a large garden and a small stage. I guess this is where they'll play.

Yep. Unbelievably, this frat is hosting AE. Now, I don't know if you know anything about American fraternities, but they aren't exactly into "Intelligent Dance Music" (or anything intelligent, for that matter). So, it was pretty weird, but there is a huge upside to having the concert in such an incongruous place: very few people.

By the time Rob Hall (the Gescom DJ) went off the stage and AE began their set, maybe 30 people had arrived. 30 people! I'll type that again: 30 people! Holy sh*t, man. This was AE at their pinnacle and I was there, virtually by myself.

Oh, man, I almost skipped over the most important part!
So, Rob Hall is doing his nonsense, playing with his jacked MiniDisc, and who is watching the whole thing from the crowd? Sean Booth. The dude, himself. A couple people are coming up to him with some bullshit, but I stand back. (One very out-of-his-element, way too old to be wearing all-black, guy asked him to listen to his tape [yes, tape] of his tracks in which he used "drum triggers" to trigger keyboard sounds! Drum triggers!) As I watched "Old Man Omen" hand Sean the tape, I remembered that I had brought a FutureMusic magazine in case I wanted to get an autograph or something, so I thought, this is my chance. I might as well ask him.

So I come up to him (mistakenly calling him Rob, at first--that must've pissed him off) and page through the magazine, looking for the article. He grabs the mag and starts paging through it himself. "What the fuck is this shit? Why don't you get a real mag with proper gear reviews? We haven't talked to these guys for years," he informs me in a thick, Manchester accent, while glossing over the one-paragraph WARP profiles. "I'm not fuckin' signin' it, mate."
"Hey, I'm a big fan."
"Fine, but this mag is shit."

So, that's what he wrote, along with his signature: "This mag is shit."
HAH!

Yeah, so the concert was great, but that was one of the most entertaining days of my life--not because I was a fanboy--but because of the almost perfect circumstances surrounding it. Can you think of any better environment to be in to watch your (then) favorite artists?

new track - nice and easy

Notes:

For this track, I used the Monomachine, G2, and a vst synth, the SQ80L. The dominating synth sound came from the G2. It's a pretty standard subtractive synth sound--it uses 3 oscs, slightly detuned, and a filter. The filter had a little extra "analogness" thanks to some funky trick that I
found on some other g2 patch (sorry, I can't find the patch that I used). There's an LFO controlling the PWM and filter freq, I think.

The G2 synth patch was sequenced by the Monomachine. The arppegiator was employed (random mode, so not every note is repeated in the same order). I used the joystick to control the filter freq and the LFO speed, if I remember correctly. The Mono has a cool "key/scale quantizer" that puts all notes entered into a specific key or scale. I played with that a little bit.

The more traditional-sounding drums also come from the Monomachine.
There's another track, in which some more percussive hits are heavily processed by the g2. The whole thing was recorded live on three tracks, with some editing and fixing done.
Oh, and then there's the soft synth that you hear throughout the tune; that came from this great vst synth, the SQ80L. It's really great but the UI sucks, so it's difficult to make a good sound in a flash.

I just purchased an x0xb0x from this guy on the elektron-users.com forum. It's amazing! Do you want to hear a couple quick examples? Ok. I've uploaded them the box on the right side. "bad request" is like slow pimpin'. "resource not available" is more bouncy. Don't be afraid: "beautiful violence" is another one of my monikers. I have secured the domain name and intend to put some content up soon.
By the way, I've also uploaded various firmware files for the x0x from across the net, for your convenience. Please contact me if you do not wish to have your file up here.

The new track is called "point within a circle". It's characterized by it's thumping and chirping beat (MDUW) and slightly disharmonious "chimes" or vibes. The main G2 patch is pictured and you can download it, if you wish, by accessing the box, down there.

That's a new "feature" of this site. I'll upload lots of song-related junk and you can do what you will with it. (Still copyright-protected. I'll work on getting a Creative Commons license though.)

Phaelam sent me this really thick beat that he made on his Elektribe...ahem, I mean Electribe (which shouldn't be confused with anything Elektron, although it's still a very capable machine), and I chucked it into the MDUW.
The MDUW is great for on-the-fly tweaking of samples, and that's what I did to the beat. Reverse here, stutter there...oh, and the filter and compression!
Anyway, so all the percussion-type sounds come from the MDUW, while the synth sounds were contributed by the DSI Evolver.
I consider it a TReD tune, but it's really about 80% [d], 10% phaelam, this time. Still, without that original beat, there would be no song. Thanks [p]!

These two tracks are really just remnants of some older material I was going to use for a remix, but never got to finishing...until now. Since they sample two of my favorite phaelam songs, "shades3" and "kuul", they are considered TRED tracks. After all, without those emotive keys, I'd have nothing to build upon.

New track: "believe264P". Phaelam says it's one of my best and I agree. It started off with just the main synth line from the monomachine, but after creating the beat on the machinedrum, it became a "real" track. The monomachine track is one Superwave-ENS machine routed through a Dynamix track. I filtered both in realtime and modulated the delay at the end. The sequence is simple, but I changed the pitch of a couple of the oscillators as it played. There's also another ENS machine that startes later in the track.
The beat is all machinedrum UW.
There's more to tell...just ask if you're interested.

The story: made for the December Elektron-users.com Monomachine contest. The rules seem somewhat limiting: use only the "Superwave - Ensemble" machine. The SWAVE>ENS, which makes up one of the five synthesis types available on the Monomachine, is a four osc synth with adjustable pulsewidth, waveform, and even chorus width and level. Three of the oscs can be changed in relation to the root key, +/- 12 semitones. And then you have the Mono's extensive modulation possibilities...it's a very flexible machine.

For this tune, I started with a "boom-bap" sort of pattern as a base and crafted the sound until it felt nasty. The filters are just sick on this thing. In fact, they do downright weird things to the sound. For instance, the main sound has a high HP Q level setting that causes strange aliasing artifacts in the upper-most octave. When you add the SRR (sample rate reduction) effect and modulate the HP filter BASE, it sounds like Tron screaming for his life or something.

Anyway, there's another deep, modulating texture going on as well as a digital "hi-hat" thing. The onboard arp in "SID" mode was employed on every track with different settings.

Recorded, arranged, and mastered in Live.

This one is about 80% G2, 20% MDUW. I used two home-made patches in the G2, mainly. The first one is a swirly, panning, modulated pad with heavy compression; the other, a multi-osc bass using the 18db "Classic" filter.

The drums are all MDUW. The first beat is based on the TRX machines and the second utilizes the ROM machines. For more details, just ask.

I finally got around to uploading some of my favorite Phaelam loops/mini-tracks. Some of these are really, really good--I just wish they were longer. "[d] looped..." and "noun_verb test" are TReD Grp. tracks (which means phaelam did a track and I added to it or vice-versa). Download em:
